Shaping Germany's Future

Date of Editorial Board meeting:
Publication date:
Saturday, February 1, 2014
Abstract in English:
In recent years, Germany's economy has outpaced nearly all other countries in Europe. The economy is entering its fifth year of growth in succession, employment is at a record level, state and social insurance revenues have increased, thereby significantly reducing strain on the national budget, and new borrowing by the Federal Government has been reduced to almost zero. Germany is in good shape – thanks, among other things, to a targeted reform policy undertaken in the past. Our country was able to respond decisively to the international financial crisis and resulting economic slump, as well as the debt crisis in Europe. Politicians reacted by creating the framework Germany’s citizens utilised intentionally. Collective bargaining partners safeguarded jobs by acting responsibly. Together, we were able to ensure that our country emerged stronger from the crisis. These are grounds to be confident.

Future Scenarios for the Eurozone: 15 Perspectives on the Euro Crisis

Keywords:
Date of Editorial Board meeting:
Publication date:
Friday, March 1, 2013
Abstract in English:
The Eurozone is standing at a crossroads, facing the biggest challenges in its history: the systemic crisis and the political attempts to overcome it have far-reaching consequences for the future of the Economic and Monetary Union, European integration and Europe in the world. By identifying the main driving forces that influence the future development of the Economic and Monetary Union, a number of different scenarios were developed to show what the Eurozone will look like in the year 2020. Four major scenarios are imaginable: (A) Muddling through the Crisis. The Eurozone remains a house without a protecting roof. (B) Break-up of the Eurozone. The Euro house falls apart. (C) Core Europe: evolution of two-level integration with a smaller and stable, but exclusionary Euro house. (D) Completion of the Monetary Union by a fiscal and political union. The roof is repaired and construction completed.
